Advisory Committee

Each year MFSI holds two SMCC-MFSI Advisory committee meetings, designed to ensure that the organization keeps to its mission. All are welcome to attend. A public comment period is offered at the beginning. The next meeting will be held at 10:00am on Friday, December 6, 2024 at MFSI in Brunswick.

MFSI’s mission is to advance fire training within the letter of the law and not stray from the mission unless directed by those that have authority over MFSI.  Maine Fire Service Institute falls under Maine State Law MRS Title 20-A §9003. State agents for federal programs. The following provisions shall apply to federal fire programs in the State. [PL 1981, c. 693, §§ 5, 8 (NEW).]

 President; state agent. (Community College System President, tasked to Director of MFSI) The president shall be the state agent to be contacted by the United States Fire Administration about matters dealing with the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974, Public Law 93-498. [PL 1987, c. 124, §5 (AMD); PL 1989, c. 878, Pt. I, §12 (AMD).] 

This means, Maine Fire Service Institute shall partner with the National Fire Academy, apply for the State Fire Training Systems Grant Program, through FEMA annually, to support NFA and NFA-endorsed programs in Maine. MFSI shall coordinate with the National Fire Academy for on campus and off campus (In-State) program deliveries at all opportunities until funds are exhausted.

 System; testing; certification. The system (Community College, via MFSI) shall be the state testing agency for the National Professional Qualification Board of the Joint Council of Fire Services Organizations (Pro Board). The president may award certificates to personnel of municipal and incorporated volunteer fire departments using competency standards established by the Joint Council of Fire Services Organizations. Maine Fire Service Institute shall maintain the Pro Board accreditation for certain professional qualifications and shall adopt officially the most current National Fire Protection Association Standards on fire training, testing and certifying. Please note that most of these standards will be consolidated and changing the numeric identification.  i.e. NFPA 1001 will become NFPA 1010.

  • NFPA 1001 Professional Qualifications Firefighter Level I & II (Pro-Board)
  • NFPA 1041 Professional Qualifications Fire & Emergency Services Instructor Level I & II (Pro-Board) & Live Fire Instructor/Instructor In-Charge (State of Maine certification)
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level I & II (Pro-Board)
