LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
First and foremost, we see the work being done across Maine. We observe the incidents reported nightly on the news and recognize the consistent, professional response by fire departments throughout the state. Crews are arriving prepared, operating effectively, and bringing incidents under control quickly and efficiently. This reflects a high level of training, discipline, and commitment.
Winter firefighting in Maine, and throughout Northern New England, presents unique and demanding challenges. Severe weather, limited access, and harsh operating conditions test even the most experienced personnel. Despite these obstacles, you continue to perform at an exceptionally high level, often making difficult operations appear routine.
All of us at the Maine Fire Service Institute are extremely proud of your dedication to public service and to the communities you protect. Your professionalism and commitment do not go unnoticed, and we are honored to support your continued success.
At MFSI, we’re heading into the new year with some serious work ahead, and that’s a good thing. We have significant plans underway to make fire training in Maine better than ever, with improvements coming to Fire Instructor I & II, Fire Officer I & II, and Live Fire Training programs.
All of this work falls under the new NFPA 1020 Standard, and in 2026 we are required to adopt, update, and resubmit these programs to Pro Board to maintain our accreditation.
Some like to talk about the Seven P’s of Success. “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance”. While there are plenty of variables outside our control, one thing is within our control: showing up, working hard, and not missing deadlines. That’s exactly what we’re doing.
Because of the scope of this work, there may be some short-term delays with Fire Officer programming. We’ll push as hard as we can to keep things moving and get programs back online as quickly, and correctly as possible. To help meet demand, we are partnering with RAFT to deliver a Fire Officer II program in July.
Looking ahead, 2026 will also bring the following opportunities:
- Vent Prop – Train the Trainer
- Basic Pumps – Train the Trainer
- VFIS returning for EVDT Train the Trainer programs
- Planned State Fire Instructor Workshop Fall 2026
MFSI remains committed to running an organization that flows, works well, and supports the Maine fire chiefs, just as our mission states. We’re here to support the fire service, strengthen professional qualifications, and deliver training that matters. We’re looking forward to another strong year of fire service training across Maine.
Stay warm, stay safe. We need you all.
